Every parents wants to be involved
in choosing a career or get involved in choosing a course of study for their
kids in school, in as much as this is a normal thing to be concern about, a lot
of parents make the mistakes of totally making the decision and choosing a
course of study for their kids, some parents wants their kids to study the
course they themselves never got the opportunity to study, or they choose
courses they didn’t have the intellectual capacity to study, some choose courses
that have no interest to their kids just because their friends kids are
studying such course.
Parents should talk with their kids
about what course interest them now, and show them that interest could change
in the future, thus guiding them making rational decision.
Parents should build trust, by
positively influencing their kids to make smart decision based on ultimate
career goal and present interest, this conflict of interest and career goal can
be confusing for young kids.
kids are easily encouraged to go
after courses they are good at, a child might be good in science subjects but
just because the father is very successful in law, and he is well respected in
the society, the child might just want to be like daddy and go for law in the
university, and this may not be the best for that kid, so parents should be
able to come in, in such scenario and advise the child on the best decision for
that child.
As good parents, that want the best
for your child, you should in a subtle and playful way ask your child these
following questions:
1)
Which
subjects/courses does your kid feel passionate about?
2)
Which subjects
immediately grabs your child attention and imagination when talking about
academics at home and in class?
3)
Which subjects
gives your child sustainable source of stimulation?
Do not totally take control of making the
decision without the child, I will discourage this practice for parents in
totality, there are so many ways for parents to get involved in the decision making
process for their kids career choices, or the course of study for their kids in
the university.
There are so many ways parents can
get involved in the decision making process of their kids choosing a career and
none of them encourages the parent to be the one to pick a course or a career
for their wards. As a parent, you know
what your children loves to do when they were younger and what gets their
attention, you should be able to motivate a child to follow his or her dream in
whatever field that interest them, I will advise that parent encourages and guide
their children to becoming whatever they choose to study, by doing this, the
child will be encouraged to be the best in anything they choose to do.
When parents take the lead in
choosing a career or selecting a course of study for their children, the
ultimate effect will result to the child failing in these selected courses or
careers, the child in most cases will suffer, that is why you see a young men
in collage studying courses like medicine but cannot do well or students in law
but cannot seem to have any idea about what the law is all about, in these
cases the child suffers because the end result will be a young man being confused
and not knowing what to do in their profession life.
The society suffers when parent
select careers and chooses academic course for their wards, this is because a
child may not have interest in such courses and end up failing or being average
in what their parents have chosen for them to study, this will affect their
productivity when they get into the labor market and thus reducing the
potential of innovation which drives and aid growth in a particular field, thus
affecting that sector.
Every child is unique and have
different level of consuming information thus should be left alone with little
guidance to choice what he or she want to study in the university.
